Week One (6/13 to 6/15)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: Create a one-paragraph introduction. Tell me three things you like to do, two things you do not like (broccoli...homework), and one important thing I should know about you. First, we will create a rough draft. Then we will use a checklist to polish it up for a final draft. (Due on 6/15/2023)
- Music Appreciation: Create a music autobiography. Pick 3 songs, explain how they represent you. Find clean versions online. Then put it all together in a slide presentation. (Due on 6/15/2023)
Week Two (6/20 to 6/23)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: Join us Google Classroom (https://classroom.google.com/c/NjE0NDkwMjkzNzg0?cjc=ntmdhu5). This week we will be introduced to the basics of Creative Writing. We will talk about the levels of personal experience and how to use them to select a topic to write about.
- Music Appreciation: Join us Google Classroom (https://classroom.google.com/c/NjE0NDkyNDE1NTIx?cjc=heiyfta). This week we will work on our Music Genre Research/Presentation, due on Friday, June 23.
Week Three (6/27 to 6/29)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: This week we will focus on the use of language in creative writing by examining and discussing its use in poetry and/or music. We will write our own compositions using figurative and descriptive language.
- Music Appreciation: This week we will discuss the role music plays in culture. We will look particularly at the different groups of instruments and discuss how they are made and/or have changed over time. Students will create a presentation that examines the history in a culture other than our own. Music and Culture, due on Thursday, June 29.
Week Four (7/5 to 7/7)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: This week we will focus on story elements. Our compositions will revolve around the use of story elements in a specific fairy tale. Presentations are due on Friday, July 7.
- Music Appreciation: This week we will continue our discussion of musical instruments. Students will choose a specific instrument and research its origins, uses, and how it may have changed over time. Presentations on Musical Instruments are due on Friday, July 7.
Week Five (7/11 to 7/14)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: This week we will focus on setting and plot. Students will use descriptive language to describe the setting and plot of their favorite movie, TV show, or book. In addition, students who choose can also create a drawing or illustration to further explain the setting of their "story."
- Music Appreciation: This week we will focus on the evolution of music in the United States. Students will read articles about specific 20th century composers (musicians) and answer comprehension questions about them. Students will also listen to specific musical selections for each composer and analysis the different styles of music. Packet will be due on Friday, July 14.
Week Six (7/18 - 7/21)
- Creative Writing & Journalism: In the final days of ESY, we will look at ways to enhance our writing. Students will pick one or more of the writing assignments they completed during ESY to apply the techniques we will discuss in class.
- Music Appreciation: This week we will focus on the role of the composer in creating music. Students will choose a specific composer to research and share in a presentation. Composer Project are due on Thursday, July 20.
